Rocket-a-thon May 12th
Pack 990 and Troop 990 announced they will attempt to set an official Guinness World Record for the simultaneous launch of 990 model rockets.
The current record is held by the Boy Scout Mid-America Council in Omaha, Nebraska for launching 399 rockets successfully in a simultaneous in September 2005. Each of the rockets will be individually built and hand-painted. The rockets will rise 500 to 1000 feet in the air and must launch within 5 seconds of each other to meet the standard set by London’s Guinness World Record committee.
The Scouts are inviting national and local community leaders and media are invited to attend the launch early to film the set-up and special guests.
Date: Saturday, May 12th Launch Time: 10:00 AM Event Time: 8:30 AM to 10:00 AM Location: Travis County Expo Center
The World Record Rocket Launch is sponsored by Quest Aerospace, Hobbytown USA, Krispy Kreme, Phillips & Company, Supercuts, Broker Network Realty, St. Gabriel’s Catholic School, Central Texas Oral Surgery Associates and the Capital Insurance Managers. The Austin Area Rocketry Group and Travis County Law Enforcement Association have also provided special assistance and consultation for the event.

I have several scouts in my unit who need to launch a rocket for space exploration merit badge. They've built the rocket but haven't yet launched it. Participating in this event would be a neat way for them to complete the badge.

Roy,... That's a neat idea, but we have all the rockets that we need. Rich Phillips is the main coordinator and the AARG is putting together some special wiring & ignitors to help guarantee success for this world record event. A lot of technical precision has gone into the planning and its on a tight schedule. Thanks for the offer,... come out and see us! Steve S.
