Course descriptions:
Fast Start Training - Introduction to Scouting programs designed to get the program up and running as quickly as possible. All leaders view the training either prior to accepting the calling or as soon as possible afterwards. Program specific (Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity, Venturing) / 20 minutes duration.
BSA Youth Protection - Discusses the issue of child abuse and a leader’s responsibility in assuring that abuse does not occur and reporting abuse. All leaders who work with youth should take. Two versions are available online, one for Cub and Boy Scouting and another for Venturing. Required every two years (every year for in-state camps) / less than one hour duration.
New Leader Essentials - Introductory session that highlights the values, aims, history, funding, and methods of Scouting. All leaders should take as soon as possible after called to a BSA position. Required once – covers all Scout positions / 90 minutes.
Leader Position Specific - Courses focus upon the specific role a leader has when working in Scouting. Required once for each new position. When position changes Leader Specific Training for the new position is required. Cub Scout Leader and Troop Committee Challenge are half day courses, with Scoutmaster/Assistant Scoutmaster and Venturing Leader Specific Training lasting a full day.
OWL (Outdoor Webelos Leader) - In a camp setting, the OWL course is geared to the Webelos leader and includes the skills to teach the Outdoorsman, Forester, Naturalist, and Geologist activity badges as well as how to take Webelos camping, making them better prepared for Boy Scouts. One full day.
Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills - A learn-by-doing course covering all outdoor Boy Scout skills thru First Class. Participants camp with a “patrol” made up of other adults. . Outdoor skills topics covered include Campsite selection, Knots, Woods Tools (axe, saw, and knife), Fires, Outdoor Cooking, First Aid, Plant identification, Animal identification, Backpacking and Hiking, Map and Compass, Leave No Trace Camping and Campfire programs. Required once for ASM or SM position (optional for Venturing Leaders but strongly recommended) / Overnight campout: 2 days & 1 night.
BALOO (Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation) - Pack overnighters must be organized and led by an adult leader who has successfully completed BALOO training which allows Cub Scout Leaders to learn safety and camping basics like cooking & fire starting / Six hours.
LNT (Leave No Trace) – Since Scouting uses the outdoors to teach ethics and values, LNT training will help make sure there still will be outdoors. Needed for units camping at Griffith League.
Wood Badge - The course prepares and enhances a leader’s ability to provide the needed adult leadership in Scouting. Wood Badge is a comprehensive training course started by Robert S. Baden-Powell to help leaders hone their skills, extend their understanding of the youth they lead and the adults they work with, and to go to new levels of personal growth and learning as Scouters / two 3-day weekends.
Powderhorn - A resource course that follows the outdoor skills that comprise the Venturing Ranger Award, giving participants an exposure to outdoor/high adventure activities. Two 3-day weekends.
