Are you a Scouter ready to experience high adventure, but don’t have all of the tools? Or do you just want to try some new activities to liven up you unit. Powder Horn is for you. A high adventure skills and resource course for Venturing and Boy Scout leaders, Powder Horn is two, three-day weekends of fun for adult Scouters. The course is scheduled for September 10-12 and 24-26, 2009, at Camp Tahuaya, near Belton.
Its fun, but fun with a purpose. The course provides adult leaders with the resources to run an effective high adventure program for Venturers or older Boy Scouts. And one course lesson is that adult leaders don’t have to become experts in an activity to introduce it to their Scouts or Venturers. Rather, they need to know how to help their unit’s youth leaders find and recruit experts.
Powder Horn demonstrates this by bringing in local experts, or “consultants,” to teach and expose participants to activities such as sailing, canoeing, climbing and rappelling, scuba diving, fly casting, and horsemanship. Other areas include cooking, wilderness survival, backpacking, shooting, and mountain biking.
If you are ready to take the next step, register for the next Powder Horn course. The cost is $245 total for 6-day course, including all meals, training materials and supplies. Registration and other information are available at http://www.longhorncouncil.org/Info/Powder-Horn.aspx.
