Introducing the District Training Chair

Happy New Year everyone! My name is Bill Bryson, and I am your new District Training Chair, which means that I am responsible for making sure that all your personal and unit training-related New Year’s resolutions are realized.

Every youth deserves a trained leader, so every leader should seek out and complete the training for their position. The goal of any District, including the Armadillo District, is to make sure that 100% of our volunteer leaders are fully trained for whatever position they hold – whether unit leader, assistant unit leader, Den Leader, Committee member, Chartered Organization Representative, or Commissioner. This includes both position-specific training and Youth Protection Training.

For most positions, training can be done online through the BSA Learn Center at my.scouting.org. This training – both position-specific training and Youth Protection Training – is generally organized into 3-5 minute modules and can be completed at your convenience on virtually any device. Ironically, the convenience of the online training often leads to a lot of partially trained leaders, as Scouters complete some modules, and then log off with the intention of completing the online training later. Unfortunately, sometimes the Scouter never logs back on and therefore never actually finishes the training.

An alternative to online training and a great way to get the training done in a single session, is to attend an in-person training course. Classes are offered by both the Council and the District. At the Council level, training courses are offered at University of Scouting (register now for the 2018 event) and MEGA Training events. At the District level, the Armadillo District Training Committee periodically offers “open campus” courses with no registration required – anyone who wants to attend can show up and be trained for specific positions.

A calendar of both Council and District training offerings for the first half of 2018 is below, and I encourage all Scouters to avail themselves of these training opportunities if you are not already fully trained for your position. (Note: The venues for the District “open campus” sessions are still being determined and locations will be announced by the end of February.)
