Fall Recruiting Kickoff August 17
Written by Roy Kleinsasser
Thursday, 22 July 2010
All Pack leaders involved in helping their Pack with membership are invited to attend the Armadillo Fall Recruiting Kick-Off at 7 p.m. on Aug. 17 at Covenant Presbyterian Church at 3003 Northland Drive.  Attend and get all the info you need to run a successful fall recruiting event!

The Armadillo District Membership Committee will deliver to you a plan that's ready to implement and tips on how to do it right.  Also, this will be the place and time where you'll pick up yard signs, posters and other materials to get your message out.

Experience has proven that you'll do best by planning ahead and having a team of at least four parents.  So, now is a great time to schedule your event and to build your team.  It's easy of you start getting commitments soon.  Even easier if your whole team comes to the Kick-Off to get the demos and time-saving tips we'll have for you!

Scheduling the event?  The first day of school in AISD is Aug. 23.  The first week is too chaotic to plan anything, so you'll want to consider dates as early as Aug. 31 and no later than Sept. 23.  Check with your school to confirm dates to be avoided.  Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday nights (or afternoons) are best.  So, start planning the date of your event now.  Some Pack's reach the most parents right after school and others hold an evening "Rally Night" event.  Some do both.  Remember, all new member applications are due to Bob Oatman no later than the evening of Sept. 23.  Turn them in early and often and, hopefully, well before Sept. 23.

Changes in Youth Protection Policies

Important Changes to the Boy Scouts of America's Youth Protection Training Policies

Recently, the Boy Scouts of America announced important changes to its Youth Protection policies. The purpose of these changes is to increase awareness of this societal problem and to create even greater barriers to abuse than already exist today in Scouting.

Effective June 1, 2010:

  • Youth Protection training is required for all BSA registered volunteers, regardless of their position.
  • New leaders are required to take Youth Protection training before submitting an application for registration. The certificate of completion for this training must be submitted at the time the application is made and before volunteer service with youth begins.
  • Youth Protection training must be taken every two years. If a volunteer's Youth Protection training record is not current at the time of recharter, the volunteer will not be reregistered.

To find out more about the Youth Protection policies of the Boy Scouts of America and how to help Scouting keep your family safe, see the Parent's Guide in any of the Cub Scouting or Boy Scouting handbooks, or go to http://www.scouting.org/Training/YouthProtection.aspx.

Powder Horn Training 2010. Don't miss it!

Lead Your Venturers or Older Scouts to High Adventure!

September 10-12 and September 24-26, 2010
Camp Tahuaya, near Belton

Are you a Scouter ready to experience high adventure, but don’t have all of the tools?  Or do you just want to try some new activities to liven up your unit.  Powder Horn is for you.  A high adventure skills and resource course for Venturing and Boy Scout leaders, Powder Horn is two three-day weekends of fun for adult Scouters.  The course is scheduled for September 10-12 and 24-26, 2010, at Camp Tahuaya, near Belton.

The course, a joint training of the Longhorn and Capitol Area councils, is fun, but with a purpose.  The course provides adult leaders with the resources to run an effective high adventure program for Venturers or older Boy Scouts.  And one course lesson is that adult leaders don’t have to become experts in an activity to introduce it to their Scouts or Venturers.  Rather, they need to know how to help their unit’s youth leaders find and recruit experts.
